BioBlitz 2006 - Finding nature in Hamilton City

  • Two free interactive days with New Zealand's top scientists
  • Gain data for school projects and general interest
  • Learn about fascinating organisms that live in the city

BioBlitz is a 24 hour event to promote interest in biodiversity in urban environments. We invite the public, especially teachers, students, parents, caregivers and all those who love nature to join scientists- to learn more about nature in our city and to discover how many different kinds of organisms can be recorded within a period of just 24 hours.

BioBlitz will involve about 40 scientists working from a temporary laboratory at the Museum, fitted with displays, microscopes and computers, to discover all different kinds of life-from birds to bugs, fish to fungi, plants to parasites-that live in the land around the riverbank behind the museum, in the Waikato river and Parana Park. Last year BioBlitz was held in the Auckland Domain when over 1,700 species were identified.

Scientists and colleagues will be working at the Museum and surrounding riverbank and river during daylight and night hours on 10 and 11 November 2006. Everyone is welcome to visit the scientists at the Museum where you can:

  • See displays about different kinds of life in our city
  • See live animals often found in our backyards and reserves
  • Learn about how scientists identify organisms
  • Learn about science and talk with scientists
  • Watch the tally of the number of organisms grow during the 24 hours
  • Join scientists as they look for species
  • Take part in activities , such as a night walk to find bats
